The attack occurred on 26 August 2021, at 17:50 local time (13:20 UTC), during the evacuation from Afghanistan. At least 183 people were killed, including 170 Afghan civilians and 13 members of the United States military. The bomb was detonated outside Kabul airport Thursday that resulted in the deaths of those mentioned above.
ISIS-K Suicide Bomber Responsible
The perpetrator of this attack was an ISIS-K suicide bomber who had been released from prison prior to the attack. It is believed that the individual was part of a network of terrorists operating within the region.
13 US Service Members Killed
Thirteen US service members were killed in the attack. This was the first American military casualty in the War in Afghanistan since February 2020.
169 Afghans Dead
At least 169 Afghans have been confirmed dead as a result of the bombing. This number includes both civilians and security personnel. The majority of those killed were civilians.
